With rain and wind covering much of the UK in the past couple of weeks, it seems summer has come to an abrupt end. Autumn is just around the corner, and now is the perfect time to have your boiler and central heating system serviced, ready for the colder months ahead.

The main advantage of having your boiler checked and serviced now, is that it’s not an issue to have the heating off for a few hours- and maybe longer if the technician discovers a fault. It means that by the time the weather takes a real cold turn, your boiler will be working efficiently and effectively; and safely too.

The benefits of having your boiler serviced are threefold. Firstly, it gives you improved reliability ahead of the winter season. If your boiler and heating system are inspected before winter arrives, potential problems should have been spotted and resolved, so you’re much less likely to be faced with a broken boiler and icy cold house when the temperatures are freezing. Similarly, if your boiler has been fine-tuned by a heating expert, it is likely to run more efficiently, using less fuel to achieve the desired results. Finally, having your boiler serviced before the cold season means you may be able to get a better deal. Once the cold weather arrives, heating engineers can and will charge a premium to get your boiler up and running, or even just for a check-up.

So, once you’ve decided that now is the perfect time to get your boiler serviced, what can you do to make the job quicker and easier, both for and your technician? Here are our top tips…

Have all the important information about your boiler to hand. You should have the boiler brand names, model number and the manual which came with it. You also need to know how old your boiler is.

Your heating engineer may ask to see where other equipment is, aside from the boiler. Make sure you know where thermostats and other equipment is located in the home, so that you can quickly take them to it.

If you have been having trouble with your boiler, either recently or last winter, make a note of the problems so you can report these to the engineer. Report these at the start of the service.

If you rent your home, ask the landlord about having an annual boiler service, and whether this is covered by your rent. Not only will having one ensure your home is kept warm and cosy during the winter but it will also confirm that the boiler is safe.
